I love the miracles that can take place through fasting and prayer. That doesn't mean that miracles happen every time you fast and pray; but, it can happen. The Savior said, "Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." (Matthew 17:21)
I remember many years ago when Steve's father was dying of cancer. His prognosis was not good. We decided to hold a family fast with Steve's sister and brother-in-law. Our kids were small but they wanted to participate too. They were all troopers. After our fast we met together with Grandpa and Grandma for a family prayer. Steve's brother-in-law gave the blessing.
The blessing was powerful and he was blessed that the cancer would go into remission; but, he needed to do some things to exercise his faith. Grandma and Grandpa had not been very active in Church at the time. Steve had never been sealed to them. He was told he needed to go back to Church, do his family history, and go to the Temple to be sealed to his kids.
From the time of the blessing, he started to improve. He followed the counsel he was given and within a year and a half Steve's sister was sealed to her parents in the Seattle Temple and Steve was sealed to his parents in the Idaho Falls temple. He was busy with his family history work and at the time of Steve's sealing I did the work for Steve's grandmother. Things were going very well.
Several years later he became sick with shingles. We had moved to Southern Oregon at the time and his parents were living in Brookings. He just wasn't recovering very well and we finally went and picked them up and brought them home with us so we could help take care of him. After many tests to determine what was wrong they found that the cancer had moved to his brain. It was inoperable.
Once again we decided to hold another family fast with his sister and brother-in-law. We knew miracles could happen and had the faith it could happen again. This time Steve was voice for the blessing. He wanted to bless him to be healed again; but, the Spirit had another blessing in store for him. Steve blessed him that he would remember the signs and tokens from the Temple to pass by the angels into the presence of the Lord. Steve said he felt like there was electricity running through him. He knew it was a blessing from the Lord.
Most of the time his father was delirious and didn't know anyone who was with him. The day of the blessing he was completely coherent and conversed with the family. For the next week he was delirious again while Steve's mom and I went back to the coast to pack up all their belongings and sell their mobile home. The day we got back he was coherent again and as a family we got to visit with him. He said he was tired. He said his good byes to each of us. He passed away early the next morning.
I know miracles happened with both of those blessings. The second one wasn't necessarily what we had hoped for; but, it was what the Lord wanted. He was ready to meet God. He was ready to go home.
I know fasting and prayer can bring miracles.
